If I don’t pull over soon and put some air in my tire, I’m going to crash! My LCD screen on my dashboard is flashing non-stop. Are you driving around deflated and insecure?
I have been.
Yet, I keep driving.
One of these days my tire is going to go completely bald and flat if I don’t address it. Oh, I also need to get my oil changed, but that is another story.
This year I feel like I have been driving around on three good tires and ignoring the low, almost empty one.
We ignore things that hurt us.
We ignore the rejections of yesterday while still living in the insecurity of the past.
We deem them unimportant until the pain becomes too great. Ignorance is not bliss, though. Unchecked, unfilled tires will eventually lead to a crash.
Well, Saturday, at my running group, the collision happened.
I recognized all the dents in my body image during a discussion with the other women after we ran.
tummy tuck, lipo, and diet flew across the track pavement.
We all want a quick fix to our weight but what about a change of the heart? The sudden weight loss wouldn’t make me feel permanently better about myself. Soon enough, I would be focusing on another area that needed changing, like the crows feet around my eyes.
It seems we are trapped in believing the lie that we should see ONLY ourselves as imperfect, flawed creatures.
And our bodies are dying over time. We are flawed. But that’s not all we are.
As God’s heirs, we can be immune to insecurity.
But Jesus did A.New.Thing with death on the cross.
He says, “Here’s my body, now walk in my POWER and NEWNESS of Life.”
Romans 6:4 – And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.
He says, “If you could only see what I see. I see beauty in you.”
Psalm 140:17- How precious are your thoughts about me, O God! They are innumerable!
He says, “You bear my image, not your own.”
Genesis 1:27- So God created people in His own image.
I want to look at the man after God’s own heart, King David. He was God’s image bearer of the heart. Let’s peek into what his thoughts are on body image.
David says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Psalm 139:14
Living in a posture of praise gives us joy and overshadows our flaws.
David could praise God because He had learned to live,
Secure In God’s Image, and Safe In His Love,
after battling bears, lions, giants, adultery, murder, and armies. It didn’t happen immediately and it took returning to God after repeated sin.
Are you living secure, or walking around scared, ignoring the problem?
Christ allowed His body to broken for us, so that we wouldn’t tear ours apart with surgery, diets, and self-loathing.
To be clear I am not against nutrition and exercise. Instead, it’s the cycle of dieting, overeating, and then, starving ourselves that I am against. My thoughts are that if I satisfy myself with Jesus then I could be free from this focus on food.
“But in that coming day no weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you. These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the Lord; their vindication will come from me.” Isaiah 54:17
As children of God Jesus will vindicate us.
No sin will stand against us. It is our inherent, blood bought right To Be SECURE and To SUCCEED! Jesus will have the victory over our bodies, our minds!
Jeremiah 17:8 Shows me what it is like to live securely in Christ.
“They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.”
Never stop producing fruit…
Healthy, living things produce fruit in season. In season… with time. When, I get my mind healthy, my body will fall into place. If I focus less on what goes in my mouth and more on what Goes IN MY Mind, I will achieve my goal of losing weight, the healthy way, the God way.
The only way we can satisfy the longings of our heart is with the Holy Spirit speaking to us in God’s word.
We have to rest in His presence a while so that our attention won’t be fixed on our flaws.
“And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.”
“Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found.”
So, I will dig my roots down deep into the water of God’s word. I will not worry about the lack of weight loss. I will eat healthy but not over focus on it. I’m casting all my cares (1 Peter 5:7), even body image, on Jesus.
Three ways to live securely:
- Let Jesus bear your image. Ask Jesus to reshape your mind to see yourself as He sees you. Pray this whenever a negative thought enters your mind.
- Live in praise and gratitude for all that Jesus has done for you on the cross and the new body you will have in eternity.
- Reach down deep into the Word (the living water) daily to transform the lies you tell yourself about your body.
“Help me to concentrate on Your image and not my body. Yes, Lord I want to be healthy, but I need my mind to be whole as well. Heal me Lord from my insecurity. Help me to love myself, my body again. Show me how to have self-control in my eating habits and to be satisfied only in You. Thank you that You never fail to satisfy my deepest needs (Romans 5:5). My greatest longing right now is to live in the fullness of Your love.
In Jesus’ name I pray,
